Home Automation: Way to Smart Home

Home Automation

We like keeping things at home in our control either being at home or being away from home. Today’s busy life style full of rapid movements has driven us to think of operating homely appliances automatically in place of manual operations. We want our lights to turn on whenever we are nearby, our coffee starts making itself in the morning, and our security system disarms whenever we’re almost home. These features are not only convenient, but they also save us energy and thus, save money on our utility bills. But since home automation is a relatively new concept, some people find it to be overwhelming. Here, we will understand that exactly what home automation is and how we can add some home automation into our day to day life.

Home automation is the automatic control of electronic devices at our home with the use of latest available technology. Connecting electronic devices at home with internet, allows them to be controlled remotely. With the use of home automation, electronic devices can trigger one another so we don’t have to control them manually via an app or voice assistant. For example, we can put our lights on schedules so that they turn off when we normally go to sleep, or we can set our AC to turn on about an hour before we return to work so that we can get the required room temperature while we enter into our home. Home automation not only makes life more convenient but also can even save our money on heating, cooling and electricity bills. Home automation can also lead to greater safety with the use of Internet of Things devices like security cameras and systems. Home automation works through a network of devices that are connected to the Internet through different communication protocols, like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Home automation works on three levels viz. monitoring, control and automation. Monitoring here means that we can check in on our devices remotely through an app. For example, someone could view their live feed at home from a smart security camera on mobile screens. Control means that we can control electronic devices remotely, like changing the angle of a security camera to see more of a living space. Automation means setting up devices to trigger one another, like turning on living room air conditioner half an hour before our scheduled arrival at home to make the environment of living room more cozy and cool.

Like any other thing in life, home automation has also its merits and demerits. Overall, we think it’s more than worthwhile, but it may not be worthy for everyone, depending on our personal preferences. With the use of Home Automation we can be able to control devices remotely for example we can unlock the door for a plant sitter without leaving a key under the mat. With home automation, we can set things like thermostats on schedules to make sure we are not wasting energy. Home Automation also adds comfort in our life. Being able to control devices remotely or via voice commands, set them on schedules, and even sync them with the sunrise and sunset Home Automation increases the degree of convenience in our day to day living. But at the same time these internet of things (IoT) devices are certainly more expensive than their non Wi-Fi connected counterparts. For example the cost of a smart bulb is almost seven to eight times more than that of a normal bulb; also since IoT is a relatively new technology, you may run into some bugs, like devices having trouble connecting to the Internet. Despite of these pros and cons of home automation it’s good to go for smart home app development according to our need and budget to add value in our daily living.
